Women’s Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health is an area of health care focused on addressing a woman’s reproductive health and general health issues that women commonly face. There’s a degree of crossover between women’s health and primary health.

Some of the health issues that impact women include:

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Sleep apnea and other sleep disruptions
  • High levels of stress
  • Depression and anxiety

Dr. Taweh takes the time to get to know the women in his care, delivering highly customized treatments and health guidance to help women improve their daily quality of life and avoid chronic health issues.

Why are well woman exams so important?

Well woman exams are where women receive the screenings needed at each phase of life. These annual visits always include discussing your current health and any changes you’ve noticed since your last visit.

A pelvic exam is also part of the process. This quick exam provides Dr. Taweh the chance to visually check your vaginal and cervical tissue for signs of abnormalities. If he sees areas of concern, he will discuss which diagnostic tools are the right fit.

Occasionally, a Pap smear is performed during pelvic exams. These simple screenings can detect signs of cervical cancer in the earliest possible stages when treatment is often most effective. You may not need a Pap smear every year, especially if your recent screenings have come back with a negative result.

What kinds of topics can be discussed during women’s health visits?

There are no topics that are off-limits during a well woman exam. As you move through the phases of life, your women’s health needs will shift and change, and you may want to focus on different issues.

Some of the topics commonly broached during well woman exams include:

  • Birth control
  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Fertility planning
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Sexually transmitted disease prevention, screening, and treatment
  • Sexual health
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Low sex drive

It’s important to find a physician you feel comfortable with, and one that is willing to listen to your concerns and provide unrushed, personalized care. Dr. Taweh is honored to be the women’s health provider of choice for many women in and around Danbury, Connecticut, and is currently welcoming new patients to his practice.
