Sclerotherapy

Do you suffer embarrassment, pain, or discomfort from varicose or spider veins? At Prime Medi Spa in Danbury, Connecticut, Dr. Z. Michael Taweh can help you love your legs again! Sclerotherapy treatment can be performed in as little time as your lunch break, taking 15-60 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. Sclerotherapy may be appropriate for some people with varicose veins but not for all. Call today for a 15-minute vein consultation to see if this is the right solution for you.

Sclerotherapy Q&A

I’m self-conscious about my leg veins. Can sclerotherapy help?

Yes. Sclerotherapy is a quick, outpatient procedure that minimizes spider and varicose veins on your legs.

During treatment, Dr. Taweh injects a solution (called a sclerosant) into the veins you want to be treated. The solution irritates the lining of your veins, causing them to collapse and form scar tissue. Then, your blood reroutes to healthier veins.

After sclerotherapy, the veins on your legs become less noticeable. Your skin appears smooth and blemish-free, letting you wear shorts and skirts confidently.

Can anyone undergo sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is safe and usually well-tolerated, but it isn’t for everyone. You won’t qualify for treatment if you’re:

  • Pregnant
  • Unable to get out of bed
  • Living with deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Breastfeeding

Let Dr. Taweh know if you have a history of blood clots. This won’t necessarily prevent you from getting sclerotherapy, but it may increase your risk of complications.

How do I prepare for sclerotherapy?

Before undergoing sclerotherapy, tell Dr. Taweh about your prescription medications and supplements. Certain drugs, like blood thinners and antibiotics, increase the risk of side effects, so you might need to stop taking them in the days before your procedure.

On the day of your sclerotherapy treatment, wear shorts to the office and avoid putting lotion and other ointments on your legs.

What happens during sclerotherapy?

When you arrive at Prime MediSpa, Dr. Taweh asks you to sit or lie down. He cleans the treatment area and gently massages your skin to prepare your veins to receive the sclerosing solution.

Next, Dr. Taweh injects the solution into specific veins in your legs or thighs. He uses a very thin needle, so you might feel a small pinch, but other than that, there’s little discomfort.

The number of veins that Dr. Taweh treats depends on their size and location, and your general health. You might need several sclerotherapy treatment sessions if you have lots of veins in different areas. Most people undergo 3-5 treatments, spaced two or three weeks apart.

Is there any downtime associated with a sclerotherapy procedure?

Sclerotherapy requires no downtime, and patients can walk immediately after treatment.
